Fashion / imitation jewellery is designed to be worn — but even the best-crafted piece needs a little care to keep its gold-tone or silver-tone finish looking new. Here is our complete care guide, drawn from what we tell every Jaanu Collections customer.
The three golden rules
- Wear the jewellery after make-up only.
- Avoid contact with water and perfume.
- Store in a plastic box and wipe with a soft cloth after each use.

Why "after make-up"?
Foundation, setting spray and hairspray contain oils and alcohols that dull plated finishes over time. If you wear jewellery first and then apply make-up, some of that residue transfers to the piece — usually to the parts of the choker that touch your neck. Doing make-up first and jewellery second avoids the transfer completely.
Why avoid water?
Even a splash of water — while washing hands, brushing teeth, or getting caught in the rain — starts a very slow oxidation of the plating. Salt water (beach) and chlorinated water (swimming pool) are especially harsh. Take pieces off before any water-adjacent activity.
Why avoid perfume?
Perfume and deodorant contain high concentrations of alcohol. Direct contact removes plating patches at exactly the spots the sprays land — around collarbones and behind the ears. Spray perfume first, wait 30 seconds, then wear the jewellery.
Storage that actually works
- Use a plastic box. Metal boxes accelerate tarnish; velvet-lined wooden boxes trap humidity.
- Keep each piece separated — chains scratch stones and each other in a jumbled pile.
- Store in a cool, dry place — the bathroom is the worst place for imitation jewellery.
Daily wipe-down
After you take a piece off at night, wipe it gently with a tissue or soft cloth before putting it away. This removes skin oil and any lingering make-up. A 20-second habit that dramatically extends the finish.
Travel care
Pack pieces in individual small plastic boxes or zip-lock pouches inside your suitcase. Do not use hotel jewellery trays — you will forget a piece behind. Keep a small microfiber cloth in the pouch for quick wipe-downs on the road.
Common issues (not defects)
- Bent earring back-stems in transit — straighten manually with gentle finger pressure.
- Loose stones or beads — a drop of clear jewellery adhesive re-seats them cleanly.
- Slight design variation between lots — every fresh manufacturing lot may look marginally different; this is normal for handcrafted imitation jewellery.
- Colour variation from photos — screens and lighting change how a plated finish looks.
